The Most Valuable Student Contest is gearing up for school year 2013-2014. This contest is an opportunity for your lodge to award money to students in the community with little or no cost to your lodge, CHEA and ENF write the checks.  Most Valuable Student Contest Applications will be available on line in early September. The eligibility requirements are very simple:
- Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply.
- Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks.
- College students are not eligible to apply.
- Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; permanent legal resident status does not qualify.
- Male and female students compete separately.
Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, community service and financial need.
The first level of judging is at the Lodge level. Some lodges give awards from their own funds at this level. This is an excellent way of recognizing High School Seniors in your area.
The second level is the District level. Please keep in mind that the district judging determines who will be awarded 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their district. Those winners will be awarded $700, $400 or $200 respectively and the money doesn’t come from your lodge budget, it comes from CHEA. That is 6 awards (1 boy, 1 girl each level) per district based on the district judging before the applications are sent to Fresno.
The third level of judging is at State Association level. There will be $239,000 awarded by CHEA to 286 students in California-Hawaii. This is a onetime award.
The fourth level of judging is at the National (ENF) level. About 70 California- Hawaii students will advance to the National Contest where $2,296,000 ($2.296 million) will be awarded over 4 years to 500 students.
There is a lot more information on the ENF website at http://www.elks.org/enf/scholars/mvs.cfm
Please stop by the Scholarship Booth in Modesto at Mid Term, Jan Bennett (Scholarship Vice Chairperson) and I would enjoy exchanging ideas concerning our Scholarship Program.
