Our Services for Children With Disabilities
CALIFORNIA-HAWAII ELKS MAJOR PROJECT, INC. (CHEMPI) provides therapy for children with disabilities and early vision screening for children in the following areas:
Through individual home instruction, the goal for all children in the program is to become as independent and self-sufficient as possible. Occupational therapists, working with parents, teach children essential skills ranging from feeding and dressing to sensory integration and learning through play.
Elks physical therapists evaluate and treat children with a wide range of disabilities as they travel from home to home. Their focus is to help children learn or improve important motor skills by educating or re-educating muscles and increasing strength, endurance, and coordination. Parent involvement helps increase the rate of success.
The gift of communication, the promise of the future—thanks to the Elks. Highly trained Elks Major Project Speech-Language Pathologists can diagnose a variety of communication disorders and coordinate a home therapy program with parents. Many speech-language challenges are addressed by the staff, including swallowing and feeding difficulties.
Pediatric Vision Screeners travel from school to school to test children for visual problems ranging from mild to severe. Children whose vision problems are treated early have a much better chance of seeing clearly throughout their lives. Without CHEMPI providing early screening, some vision issues could go undetected and lead to permanent vision loss.
